When producing a hoodie, one of the first decisions is: French Terry or Fleece? The answer sounds technical — but has a direct impact on the wearing feel, the seasonal suitability and the positioning of your brand.

What is French Terry?

French Terry is a loop-knit fabric — smooth on the outside, soft on the inside due to protruding loops. The fabric is lighter and more airy than fleece, regulates body heat better and feels pleasant against the skin. It is considered the 'clean' hoodie fabric: casual but not too warm.

  • Weight: 240–320 g/m²
  • Ideal for: spring, autumn, transitional season
  • Look: clean, minimalist, timeless
  • Care: easy, shape-stable
  • Print suitability: excellent for screen printing & embroidery

What is Fleece?

Fleece is a brushed knit fabric — raised on both sides for maximum warmth. It is softer, more voluminous and cosier than French Terry. Fleece hoodies are the winter product par excellence: heavy, warm and with a distinctive volume.

  • Weight: 280–380 g/m²
  • Ideal for: autumn, winter, outdoor
  • Look: voluminous, sporty, warm
  • Care: can pill with lower-quality versions
  • Print suitability: embroidery preferred; screen printing on outer side possible

French Terry is the everyday hoodie. Fleece is the statement piece for the cold months.

Loopback — the third option

Loopback (also 'Brushed Terry') is a premium variant: the inner loops are brushed and feel as soft as fleece, but the fabric is more structured than classic fleece. Many premium brands use loopback as a year-round compromise.
