Anyone producing clothing for the first time soon runs into three letters: MOQ. The abbreviation decides whether a project starts at all. Here is what it means.
What does MOQ mean?
MOQ stands for minimum order quantity: the smallest number of pieces a manufacturer produces per order. In apparel production the MOQ usually applies to one item in one colour.
Why is there a minimum order quantity?
Every production run has fixed costs that do not depend on quantity. Below a certain volume, the cost per piece gets so high that the order no longer makes sense for either side.
- Setup: patterns, screens for screen printing, embroidery programmes
- Materials: fabrics and trims are bought in minimum quantities
- Dyeing: a dye lot only pays off from a certain amount of fabric
- Changeover: machines have to be set up for every order
What is the MOQ at palstudios?
For custom production, palstudios produces from 50 pieces per item and colour. For blanks, the base products like T-shirts, hoodies or sweatpants that we finish with your design, you can start from 25 pieces.
How to start with small quantities
- Start with one core product instead of a full collection
- Choose few colours so each colour reaches the minimum
- Use blanks for first tests, available from 25 pieces
- Plan reorders once the product has proven itself
